TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS - 2008
Ladner Bantam Red Sox Victorious in Summerland!
The Game Details: Ladner Bantam Red Sox traveled to the Annual Summerland softball tournament and returned home victorious. The first 4 games of the tourney showcased the Ladner team’s dominance at the plate with great hitting from Taylor Grant, Mary Botkin, Mandi Law, Samantha Nelson, Jessica Williamson and Rebecca Griffing.
MVP awards were also handed out to Brittany Hanson, Lindsay Hancock, Melissa Milholm and Amanda Dow. Ladner was seeded first which allowed them to play the tough 4th place North Delta Cobras. The cobras faced an early elimination when their bats managed to test both Brittany Hanson and Amada Dows usually flawless pitching. Great defense by Williamson, Grant, Law and Nelson shut the Cobras down. ”Dowzie” then regained control and moved the Sox to the final game. The dramatic final game was an emotional roller coaster for both teams and spectators alike. The Ridge Meadow Rebels picked away at Ladner with fabulous bunting and short blooper fly balls that the sox had trouble handling. RbI’s by Law and Hancock managed to bring the game even early in the 4th. The rebels continued to hit and the Sox normal tight fielding bent, allowing the Rebels built a 7 run lead. Facing a mercy finish the Sox needed to get back to the bats. Nelson and Williamson to reach base on balls from the now tired Ridge meadows pitcher. Brittany Hanson then crunched a long double scoring Nelson avoiding elimination. The Injured Mary Botkin loaded the bases on another walk. She then lingered between first and second drawing a throw to allow a steal from third. Williamson bolted home colliding with the backscratcher which resulted in a controversial out that left the Rebels catcher out of the game. Unable to take her rotation at bat the Rebels started the final inning with a 6 run lead and one out. The next two outs where fielded calmly by Grant then Dow to the safe glove of Hanson on first. Needing 6 runs to tie and 7 to win, the Sox started to hit off the weary Rebels pitcher. Grant, Milholm, Nelson and Hancock all singled while Griffing and Williamson walked.
Hanson then pounded a deep base clearing double tying the game. Botkin ran on a dropped third strike which leads to another controversial out at first base after Hanson had scored. With the run disallowed the teams where forced in the international tie breaker. The rebels scored on a tight play so the Sox regrouped in the pitchers circle. Now calmed down, the Sox closed off the top half of the inning and put Botkin on second. Grant reached first on a walk while Botkin stole third then scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Milholm. With 2 out Dow hammered her third pitch deep to left field, scoring Grant, with the game wining RBI. Thanks to all the players and parents for a memorable tournament and fun weekend.
